Life as a social media manager
Fid#029: learning from the experiences of a social media manager in a growth phase
Hey K-reator!
In this newsletter, I interviewed a social media manager whose early stages are intriguing and who has been deliberate about growth. In the present day, social media management is a thriving career path, and businesses that require their services are aware of this. All social media managers are not treated equally because those who work for larger companies are only required to focus on the core task for which they were hired. Beginners who are still learning the ropes or trying to climb the success ladder while working with smaller brands, on the other hand, frequently find themselves taking on extra tasks that aren't listed in the job description.
Join me in this discussion with a social media manager who shares insights into her career path. If you have been debating whether to pursue a career in social media management, now is the time to take the plunge and get going.
Let’s get to know this intriguing social media manager.
Q. Can you briefly introduce yourself?
My name is Precious Atere. Some people call me PAT, which is gotten from the initials of my name. I am a video creator + a freelance social media manager. A Multi Creative baby.
Q. How was your first job as a social media manager?
My first job was really like a stepping stone for me. At first, I did not even know I would become a social media manager; I usually say the skill found me lol.
It was from a family friend; he noticed I was very creative and enjoyed spending so much time on social media. From there, he gave me the job of managing his page and taught me a few things. I did not even know much compared to now. So he paid me while also putting me through so many things I should know. Of course, I was also willing to learn more, so I kept doing my research. So my first job was like a blessing cause that was how everything formally started.
Q. What do you think your responsibilities are as a social media manager?
Planning and creating compelling content for social media.
Posting content across all social media platforms
Engaging with audience/customers on each platform.
Analyzing campaigns and also creating social media analytics reports.
Planning and developing social media campaigns, too.
Building/maintaining the brand’s online presence.
These are some of the major responsibilities; however, they may differ for some people depending on the company in which they work.
Some companies might need you to design, edit videos and pictures, and run ads. However, if you work for a large corporation, you might not need to do all of that because those tasks are already handled by others. It is preferable if you are familiar with those tasks.
Q. Have you ever had a job where you had to perform tasks that weren't your responsibility as a social media manager?
If you are starting, sometimes you would have to take up the responsibilities of 3 to 4 people 😂😂😂 especially if it is a small company/brand.
So yes, I have.

Check this out folks 🕺

Q. Which responsibilities do you have that aren’t part of your job?
Because some businesses do not have in-house graphic designers, I would say designing.
So I need to have a good eye for design because some of the organizations I've worked for don't have in-house graphic designers.
So that’s like an additional skill.
Q. Which of these additional responsibilities do you like and dislike?
For dislike, I would say designing.
For likes, I would say editing videos/pictures 😌
Q. What is the highest-paying job or gig you have ever had?
Aghhh😂😂😂
I have made over 100K.
But trust me, you can earn more
Q. Please do a giveaway
I never reach that stage😂😂😂😂😂
Q. Best working experience you have ever had?
It has to be interning for an agency cause I gained a lot of knowledge.
I would always say one can’t learn everything online, you need to intern or work for people with experience.
Trust me, you would learn a lot if you put your mind to it.
Q. Worst working experience?
Ah, I can never forget.
I worked for a lady, and she made my life a living hell.
She was never satisfied; it was so annoying. She would always complain about everything.
Some nights I would cry cause of how stressed, tired and annoyed. She made me feel like I didn’t know my work, which was very draining. At some point, I started doubting myself o, it was crazy. I had to leave the job sha, make I no go ment😂
I vowed never to work with a woman again lol😂
Till I met another woman that changed the narrative 🥰
Q. Tips for those who want to be social media managers
First and foremost, I would ask whether you enjoy using social media because you must if you intend to continue using it.
You can't claim to dislike social media while aspiring to the position of social media manager, right? They are incompatible.
Second, always be willing to learn. Social media is constantly changing, so keep an open mind and be willing to learn.
Finally, do not be lazy!
Love, light and laughter!
Your guy,
Philo🧡
